These are some of the larger interpretations of my Italian plein air sketches. In these, I retain some of the feeling of the sketch, but the studio is a different environment from the field and this manifests itself in the resulting work.
"Discovering New Methods & Techniques in Tuscany with Joseph McGurl" American Artist Plein Air Painting Fall 2011This spring, I traveled to Castiglione del Bosco in Tuscany and joined several artists from Florence and New York for a couple of weeks of intensive plein air painting. Below is a sampling of my work which focused primarily on the land and stone which was dug out of it and formed into the most beautifully organic architecture.
