Take your Painting to the Next Level
Art Week with Joseph McGurl 2012

Saturday, May 19-Wednesday, May 23
National Academy of Sciences Jonsson Center
Woods Hole, MA

Workshop Focus: For this comprehensive workshop for beginners to advanced artists, we have rented the J. Erik Jonsson Center, a beautiful Cape Cod estate consisting of the shingle-style Hackerman House built in 1907 and the charming Clark Carriage House built in 1894. The property boasts panoramic views of Quissett Harbor and Buzzards Bay and offers numerous vantage points from the shore, dock, and throughout the property.

Some of the issues I will address via lecture and demonstration will be composition, color, value, drawing, creating atmospheric perspective, and creating texture. I will also demonstrate the sight-size method of painting adapted to painting landscapes and scaling up your sketches to become finished studio paintings. From my years of painting out of doors, I have developed several techniques which have simplified the process and equipment, and these will be discussed as well. Other topics of discussion will range from artistic philosophies to dealing with studio and gallery management.

Lunch: Coffee will be provided in the morning and throughout the day in the Clark Carriage House. A hot/cold buffet-style lunch is provided and will be served daily in the dining room of the Hackerman House.

Number of Participants: 16

Cost for Workshop: $975. For those requiring lodging, there are numerous options in the Bourne and Falmouth area.
