The Harbor Islands Project: Shoreline, Bumpkin Island

“The Boston Harbor Islands Project: Shoreline, Bumpkin Island: is part of my ongoing exploration and series of exhibitions which focus on the Islands of the harbor.  I paint the islands often as they contain all the elements which interest me as a landscape painter--- land, sea, and sky which are vehicles to explore light, form, space, and color.  This painting was expanded from a plein air sketch painted from the pier on Bumpkin Island.  I was interested in the change from transparency to reflection in the water as it recedes into space, and I also wanted to try a composition with a shoreline going almost vertical rather than the usual horizontal or diagonal.   The boat was imaginary, but was needed to give a sense of scale and a spot of interest.
