Light on the Sea

I’m experimenting with creating tension between the image, the frame, and the wall. In representational painting, particularly landscapes where the artist is transporting the viewer to another time and place, it is important to provide separation between the wall and the image. The current trend is for thin frames, but they look skimpy and don’t provide that separation from the wall. So I’m looking at how the wall, frame, and painting can work together. To do this, I painted a border around the image with thick textural paint- as can be found in abstract painting. This provides a wider separation from the wall and addresses the fact that the image is made of paint as is the border, but the paint in the image is altered to represent reality. I then painted the rock on top of the border. This creates uncertainty as to the space depicted, and the viewer contemplates what is representational painting, how is a flat surface altered to look three dimensional, and how does the image, frame, and wall interact. “Light on the Sea” 24x36.
